Qualities
Bred since the 1990s, the goldendoodle is constantly gaining in popularity, and for good reason. Here are just some of this dog’s qualities:
- They cause fewer allergies than other breeds
- Their keen intelligence allows them to learn tricks quickly
- Their obedient personalities and hypoallergenic coats make them ideal service dogs for people with handicaps and allergies
- They’re friendly and playful, making them perfect for families with children
- They’re not very loud and bark infrequently
- They hardly shed at all
Appearances can vary
The looks of each individual dog depends on the type of poodle that was bred with a golden retriever, which explains the wide variety of physical attributes of the hybrid. Goldendoodles can be found in a range of sizes (miniature, medium and standard), colours (gold, black, copper, white, grey, etc.) and their fur can be curly or wavy. One thing’s for sure, at Chico, we think they’re all adorable.
Essentials for a happy dog
Goldendoodles can quickly become unhappy if left alone for long periods or if they lack stimulation. Be sure to take yours out twice a day and make sure it can socialize and stretch its legs at will.
When it comes to diet, food rich in protein is required. To avoid overeating that can lead your pup to becoming overweight, serve your dog measured portions at set times rather than letting it self-feed.
To keep its coat healthy, a weekly brushing and regular trips to the groomer (about every six weeks) will keep your goldendoodle looking great.
Common health problems
Unfortunately, the goldendoodle isn’t immune to the health problems that can affect poodles and golden retrievers, such as hip or elbow dysplasia, epilepsy and cataracts. Screening tests at a young age and regular follow-ups with the veterinarian will allow for better management of these conditions, if necessary.
